[ about ]
Hong-Ling Wee is a scientist-turned-artist who realized her passion for ceramics during her pursuit of a Ph.D. degree. Her nickname is ※The Doctor Potter.§

Ceramics For Use and Sculptural Ceramics are the two broad categories of her work. She specializes in creating high-end, one-of-a-kind, handmade ceramics for use. Her focus is on making tableware that feels great in the hands, and clever constructions that transform everyday utilitarian objects we often take for granted into delightful, decorative ceramics. She sees successful designs as the union of function and aesthetics.

For her sculptural work, Hong-Ling is developing a series titled, Prayer Houses. These are architectural structures that examine the extremely private and intimate use that is carved out from public sacred spaces. The sculptures reference the hazy transition between private and public spaces, and consociate the interior with the exterior.

In January, the National Arts Council ( Singapore ) gave Hong-Ling an International Touring Grant to participate in the Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award in Australia . This May, Ceramics Monthly selected her as one of the Emerging Artists of 2006. Most recently, she was also awarded a meritorious Freeman Foundation Fellowship by the Vermont Studio Center . Her other past awards include The Irving Sherman Memorial Fellowship ( Haystack School , Maine ), The Patty Babb Fellowship ( Penland School , North Carolina ), The Ogden Pleissner Scholarship (National Academy School of Fine Arts , New York ), and the Makor/Steinhardt Center Artists' Residency.

To date, Hong-Ling has participated in numerous ceramic art exhibitions in the United States , Australia , Japan and Singapore . Her work was also featured in The Straits Times, The Business Times, Singapore (SIF Magazine), Ceramics Monthly, Sing Tao Daily, Ming Pao and The World Journal .

Last year, she organized a monumental first group exhibition for Singaporean visual artists in New York City at the Asian American Arts Center . The event was supported by the Permanent Singapore Mission to the United Nations, the National Arts Council, Singapore International Foundation and Contact Singapore.

Hong-Ling presently lives and works in New York City .
